Engineer OS vs JobLogic: an honest comparison for small UK field service firms

How Engineer OS and JobLogic compare on mobile experience, pricing, forms, and onboarding, and which suits a 5-to-30-engineer UK team.

If you run a small UK field service firm, JobLogic has probably been on your shortlist. It is one of the best known names in the category and it has been around a long time. The question most owners are really asking is not "is JobLogic good software" but "is it the right fit for a team my size, at a price that makes sense". This is an honest look at how Engineer OS and JobLogic compare, including where JobLogic is the stronger choice.

A quick disclosure: we build Engineer OS, so we are not a neutral party. We have tried to keep the comparison fair and we will tell you plainly where JobLogic wins.

The short version

JobLogic is a mature, feature-deep platform built for established service businesses, and it is priced accordingly. Engineer OS is a newer, mobile-first platform built for the way engineers actually work on site, at roughly half the price. If you have a large operation with complex contract requirements and a dedicated systems person, JobLogic's depth is a genuine advantage. If you are a 5-to-30-engineer team that wants something your engineers will actually open on their phone, without a heavy rollout, that is the gap Engineer OS was built to fill.

Mobile experience

This is the difference that matters most day to day.

Most incumbent field service tools were designed for a desktop browser in the office, with a mobile view added later. The engineer ends up squinting at a shrunken desktop layout on a phone, or reaching for a tablet. In practice a lot of teams give up and fall back to WhatsApp for the bits that should live in the system.

Engineer OS was designed phone-first for the engineer side. It installs to the home screen on iPhone or Android, works one-handed, caches its shell so it still loads on a patchy site signal, and queues photos and form data to sync when signal returns. That is not a nice-to-have. If the engineer will not use the app on site, none of the office features matter, because the data never gets entered.

If your engineers already happily use a tablet in the van, this matters less to you. If they do not, it is the whole game.

Pricing

JobLogic does not publish a flat per-engineer price, and quotes vary by configuration, but it generally sits in the £40 to £80 per engineer per month range for the kind of firm reading this.

Engineer OS is published and simple:

  • Starter, £15 per engineer per month for core job management
  • Growth, £25 per engineer per month for quotes, invoices and the customer portal
  • Scale, £40 per engineer per month for PPM, assets, parts and API access

Admins are free on every plan, there are no setup fees, and annual billing takes 20% off. For a 12-engineer team the difference over a year is substantial, and it is the kind of saving that pays for a van service or two.

Forms and certificates

Both platforms handle digital forms and certificate tracking, which is table stakes in this category. The practical question is how the forms behave on a phone in the field.

Engineer OS ships twelve form templates out of the box, including service reports, risk assessments, battery calculators and cable install checks, with drawn signatures, dynamic tables and auto-calculated fields, each producing a clean branded PDF for the customer. They are built to be completed on a five-inch screen with one hand. Certificate tracking includes expiry dates and a daily digest email so a lapse never surprises you. We also convert your existing Word or PDF forms into digital versions as part of onboarding.

JobLogic's forms and certificate handling are capable and well established. If you have very complex, deeply customised certificate and compliance workflows already running in JobLogic, that depth is a point in its favour.

Onboarding and time to value

Bigger platforms tend to come with bigger implementations. That is not a criticism, it reflects the complexity they support, but it does mean a longer wait before you see value, and sometimes a consultant's day rate.

Engineer OS is built for a light onboarding. A typical 10-engineer team is live in under a week: import your customer list and engineer roster from CSV, brand the app with your colours and logo, configure your forms, and run a 30-minute training call. You can be sending jobs to engineers' phones the same day you start the trial.

Where JobLogic is the better choice

To keep this honest, JobLogic is likely the stronger pick if:

  • You run a large or fast-scaling operation with complex, multi-site contract and SLA structures
  • You need very deep customisation and have someone whose job includes administering the system
  • You rely on specific JobLogic integrations or reporting that you are not willing to give up
  • Maturity and a long track record matter more to you than price or mobile experience

There is no shame in that. Different tools fit different operations.

Where Engineer OS is the better choice

Engineer OS tends to win when:

  • Your engineers resist the current app, or you are still partly on paper and WhatsApp
  • You want predictable, lower per-engineer pricing with free admins
  • You want to be up and running in days, not weeks
  • You value a modern, mobile-first experience over maximum feature depth

The honest bottom line

If you are a small-to-mid UK field service team and your biggest frustration is that the current system is expensive and the engineers will not use it on site, Engineer OS is worth a serious look. If you are a larger, process-heavy operation that needs maximum configurability, JobLogic's depth may justify its price.

The good news is you do not have to guess. Start a 14-day trial with no card required, bring your customer list in by CSV, and see whether your engineers actually use it. That is the only test that really counts.
