JobLogic alternatives: a buyer's guide for small UK field service firms
A practical rundown of JobLogic alternatives for UK trades, what each does well, and how to choose the right field service software for a small team.
JobLogic is a strong, established field service platform, but it is not the right fit for everyone. Plenty of small UK firms find it more system, and more cost, than they need. If you are weighing up JobLogic alternatives, this is a practical guide to the main options, what each is good at, and how to choose without wasting a month of demos.
We build one of the alternatives, Engineer OS, so treat our entry with appropriate scepticism. The rest of this guide is written to be genuinely useful whether or not you ever try us.
First, get clear on why you are switching
Before you look at a single product, write down the one or two things that actually need to change. In our experience with UK trades, the real reasons usually come down to:
- Price. The current tool costs more per engineer than the value you get from it.
- Adoption. The engineers will not use it on site, so you are still chasing photos and job sheets over WhatsApp.
- Complexity. You are paying for depth you never touch, and simple things take too many clicks.
- Mobile. The phone experience is an afterthought and it shows.
Whatever your shortlist, score every option against your own list, not the vendor's feature grid. A tool that nails your top two problems beats a tool that ticks forty boxes you will never use.
The main JobLogic alternatives
Engineer OS
Mobile-first job management for UK field service teams, built for the way engineers actually work on site. Twelve digital form templates out of the box, certificate tracking with expiry reminders, per-job photos and documents, and quotes and invoicing on higher plans. Pricing is £15 to £40 per engineer per month with free admins. Best for 5-to-30-engineer teams that want strong mobile adoption and a light, fast onboarding. Less suited to very large, highly customised enterprise operations.
ServiceM8
A lightweight, mobile-first platform aimed at small teams and sole traders who want something simple and fast to deploy. Integrates with Xero and works well for firms moving off paper job cards. Strong for the very small end, though larger teams may outgrow it.
Tradify
Popular with small-to-medium trade businesses, with clean quoting and invoicing and solid Xero and QuickBooks integration. A good all-rounder for job and money management, particularly for smaller outfits.
Commusoft
A more comprehensive platform tailored to HVAC, plumbing and electrical firms, with strong customer management and UK accounting integrations. Good for firms that want depth in service and maintenance management, and priced for that ambition.
Workever
An all-in-one field service tool aimed specifically at small and growing trade and maintenance businesses, focused on making day-to-day scheduling, dispatch and invoicing simpler. A frequently cited affordable alternative for SMBs.
Jobber
A user-friendly option often chosen by smaller service businesses, with a clean interface, a client hub, and simple quoting and invoicing. Worth noting it is North American in origin, so some terminology and compliance features may not map perfectly to UK contract structures.
Simpro and BigChange
Both sit at the larger, more enterprise end. Powerful, deep, and a good fit for sizeable operations with complex scheduling, inventory and contract needs, but heavier and more expensive than most small firms require.
How to choose without a month of demos
A simple process that works:
- Write your top two problems (from the list above). This is your scorecard.
- Shortlist three tools, no more. More than three and you will never decide.
- Run a real trial, not a sales demo. Put it on one or two engineers' phones for a week with real jobs. Adoption on site is the truest signal you will get.
- Check the total cost per engineer per month including any setup fees, and multiply across your whole team for a year. Small per-seat differences get large fast.
- Ask about onboarding time. Days versus weeks is a real difference when you are trying to run a business at the same time.
Where to start
If your main frustrations are price and engineers not using the current app on site, start your shortlist with the mobile-first, lower-cost options and trial them properly. You can put Engineer OS on a couple of phones with a 14-day trial, no card required, and bring your customer list in by CSV the same day.
